Roadworks lifted for the Christmas and New Year getaway

The Highways Agency will help people travelling on the roads over the Christmas and New Year holiday period by suspending or completing two-thirds of roadworks on its motorways and major A roads.

A total of 35 sets of roadworks have been completed and a further 44 are being suspended before 06:00 on Thursday 24 December to help drivers make smoother journeys over the busy festive period. Roadworks at 34 locations will remain in place for the safety of drivers and their passengers.

The move is part of the Highways Agency's commitment to ease congestion, helping drivers to make their journeys safely and reliably.

Data collected at the Agency's National Traffic Control Centre shows that the 27 December is generally the busiest day of the Christmas period, with total traffic volume this year expected to be 50% higher than a normal Sunday. Traffic flows are expected to be at their busiest between 10:00 and 12:00, perhaps as road users return home, visit family and friends or set out to major shopping centres.

Derek Turner, Highways Agency Director for Network Operations, said:

“Over the Christmas and New Year holidays people use our motorways and major A roads to visit friends and family, go shopping and make vital deliveries to shops and businesses. To help drivers with their journeys, we have removed as many sets of roadworks as we can, and continue to provide drivers with up to the minute journey planning advice.

“Removing roadworks is just one way we help road users at Christmas. Our Traffic Officers will be on patrol and working in our control rooms over the holiday period, to help traffic flow smoothly. Our website can help drivers plan their journeys, and by listening to DAB digital "Traffic Radio", local radio stations, or by calling our information line (08457 50 40 30) so they can keep up to date with conditions while they are on the move.

“Before starting winter journeys, drivers should check their vehicle's tyres, oil and water and ensure they are topping up with fuel, as well as checking their route for possible delays and checking the weather forecast. These simple checks are an easy way for motorists to play their part in ensuring driving over the Christmas period is as trouble free as possible.”

Roadworks and lane restrictions will be removed by 06:00 on Thursday 24 December and will not be put back before 00:01 on Monday 4 January

The list of suspended, completed and remaining roadworks is included after notes to editors.
