Construction firms across from Lancashire have an opportunity to find out how to benefit from tackling site waste at a free event, on Thursday 21 January 2010.
The seminar, being run by sustainability experts Envirowise, Envirolink Northwest and C-Tech Innovation, takes place at the Leyland Golf Club and will introduce companies to Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs), a legal requirement for major construction projects designed to help improve resource efficiency, cut waste and reduce costs.
The session will feature experts from the Environment Agency as well as Envirowise who will explain the requirement for SWMPs, and give practical guidance on how to develop and implement them. Companies will also hear the experiences of a local firm that has successfully implemented a plan, as well as learn about the wider benefits of tackling construction waste. The session will end with a free networking lunch.
Nick Ward, Envirowise Regional Manager for the North West, commented: “Over half of the waste arising in our region is construction waste – that's some 10 to 12-million tonnes every year – and the introduction of SWMPs in 2008 was designed to help drive down waste levels by encouraging wider reuse, recycling and recovery.
“It is important that local companies realise their obligations for recording the construction and demolition waste they produce, and this free half day session will assist any company involved in producing an SWMP. What's more, there are significant environmental and economic benefits in companies paying close attention to the resources they use, information on which will be available at the event.”
The event will be held at the Leyland Golf Club, Leyland, on Thursday 21 January between 8:30am and 2.30pm. For more information and to sign up, businesses should call Linda McGeechan on 01925 813 200 or visit the website.
Companies can also access free, independent practical advice on all areas of resource efficiency by contacting the Envirowise Advice Line on 0800 585 794 or by visiting www.envirowise.gov.uk.
